my baby does the GRIND
Backside 50-50
Information:
The 50-50 is the most basic grind. Before learning this trick you should be able to ollie.
Description:
While rolling the skateboarder jumps and the skateboard comes off the ground with them. He/she lands with the hangars of the trucks on the obstacle and continue riding while the trucks and the obstacle grind together. He/she jumps off the obstacle with the board and land on all four wheels.
Technique:
1. Find a grindable rail, ledge or whatever. I find it easier to learn on a ledge, so you might want to try there first.
2. Push a few times and get some speed. The faster you go, the longer you will be able to grind for.
3. Ride parallel up to the object you're going to grind with your feet as you would have them an ollie.
4. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Land with both trucks evenly on the object. Try and land with your feet still in the ollie position so that it is easier to pop off.
5. When you're at the end of the object give your tail a slight pop and land back on the ground on all four wheels. Ride away.
Additional Help:
Problem: I don't grind. My board just stops.
Reason: You're going too slow or trying to grind something that is too rough, rusty, etc.
Solution: Go faster if speed is your problem. If it's the obstacle then you can wax it up or find something else to grind.
Backside 5-0
Information:
The 5-0 is a fairly simple grind. Before learning this trick you should be able to 50-50 and manual.
Description:
While rolling the skateboarder jumps and the skateboard comes off the ground with him/her. He/she lands with the hangar of their back truck on the obstacle and continue riding while the truck and the obstacle grind together. He/she jumps off the obstacle with the board and land on all four wheels.
Technique:
1. Find a grindable rail, ledge, lowbox or whatever. I find it easier to do on a ledge, so you might want to try there first.
2. Push a few times and get some speed, the faster the longer you'l' be able to grind for.
3. Ride parallel up to the object you're going to grind with your feet as you would have them an ollie.
4. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie up and push down on the tail a bit so that only your back truck lands on the object. Keep you're balance using your arms. It doesn't matter whether your tail touches or not, it's all about your personal style, but I find it looks nicer if it isn't touching.
5. When you're at the end of the object give your tail a slight pop and land back on the ground on all four wheels. Ride away.
Additional Help:
Problem: I keep falling back off my board.
Reason: You're leaning back too much.
Solution: Don't lean back to make keep the front trucks from touching. Instead you should be pushing down on your back foot the same way you would for a manual.
Backside Boardslide
Information:
The backside boardslide is a simple slide trick. Before you learn this trick you should know how to ollie. If you can frontside 180 it will help as well.
Description:
While rolling the skateboarder jumps and the skateboard comes off the ground with him/her. He/she turns 90 degrees frontside and lands with the middle of the board on the obstacle. He/she slides along the center of the board then comes off the obstacle and turns 90 degrees so that he/she can land on all four wheels.
Technique:
1. Find a grindable rail, ledge, lowbox or whatever. I find it easier to do on a low, flat rail, so you might want to try there first.
2. Push a few times and get some speed. The faster you go, the longer you will be able to slide for.
3. Ride backside up to the obstacle (so that your back and heels are facing the obstacle).
4. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie up over the obstacle and turn 90 degrees frontside. Make sure your front trucks clear the obstacle and land on the middle part of your board. Lean forward a little if it is a fast sliding obstacle, or back a little bit if it is a slow sliding obstacle. Keep your balance and slide until the end.
5. When you're at the end of the object begin to turn back slightly. Complete your turn back once you are off of the obstacle.
6. Land on all four wheels and ride away.
Additional Help:
Problem: My board just slides out from under me.
Reason: You are probably leaning back too much, or not really giving much effort when you try to slide.
Solution: Experiment with how much you need to lean. Lean only slightly forward or slightly back at first. Keep adjusting until you can stay on and slide properly. Do not just try and jump onto the rail and expect to slide until the end. You need to concentrate on staying balanced throughout the slide.
Backside Crooked Grind
Information:
The crooked grind has some name variations. It is also called k-grind, krooked grind, or crooks. Any name is correct and it's all the same trick. Before learning this trick you should know how to 50-50. Being able to nosegrind will help, but isn't needed to learn this trick.
Description:
While rolling the skateboarder jumps and the skateboard comes off the ground with him/her. He/she lands with the hangar of the front truck on the obstacle. He/she turns the back end of the board out, away from the object so that it is crooked and continue riding while the truck and the obstacle grind together. He/she jumps off the obstacle with the board and land on all four wheels.
Technique:
1. Find something to grind. If it's not a rail, it will be easier and less scary to learn on.
2. Get rolling. The faster you go the longer you'l' be able to grind for.
3. Ride parallel up to the object you're going to grind with your feet as you would have them an ollie, but you might want your front foot a little closer to the nose.
4. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie up and point your nose down at the object by straightening your front foot, but keeping your back leg a little bent. As soon as your front truck hits the object (or even before if you want) push your back foot forward to make the board turn out at an angle (so that you're crooked).
5. Push your nose all the way down with your foot completely over the nose and parallel with the object you're grinding. This will keep you locked in. Since your nose is dragging you will slowed down a bit. Make sure that you have a decent amount of speed when you're trying this trick or you won't grind.
6. When you're at the end of the object take some weight off of your nose so that it lifts up a little bit. Then push it back down quickly to sort of nollie out. Land on all four wheels and roll away.
Additional Help:
Problem: I don't grind. My board just stops.
Reason: You are leaning forward too much when you try to grind.
Solution: Even out your weight to cover the area of the board, not just the nose. That way you will be pushing down enough to lock in and grind, but won't be pushing too hard and get thrown off the board.
Backside Feeble Grind
Information:
The feeble grind is a variation of the smith grind that I actually find easier to do than the smith grind. Before learning this trick you should know how to 50-50. Being able to smith grind will help too.
Description:
While rolling the skateboarder jumps and the skateboard comes off the ground with him/her. He/she lands with the hangar of the back truck on the obstacle. The rest of the board hangs over the other side of the object with the rail (the side of the deck) touching the object to help balance. He/she continues to grind until the end, pops off, lands on all four wheels, and ride away.
Technique:
1. Find a grindable rail, ledge or whatever. It would probably be easier to learn on something like a lowbox or a ledge, not a rail unless you are really comfortable on them.
2. Push a few times and get rolling. The faster you go, the longer you'll be able to grind for.
3. Ride parallel up to the object you're going to grind with your feet as you would have them an ollie.
4. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie up and over the object like you were going to 50-50 or 5-0. Make your back truck land on the rail, but push the rest of your board over the other side of the object and let your rail (the side of your deck) rest on the object.
5. Grind as far as you can then push down on your tail to lift your front truck off the object and use your front foot to guide you back so that you board is straight for landing. 6. Land back on the ground on all four wheels. Ride away.
Additional Help:
Problem: I'm not feeble enough to get my board onto the object and grind.
Reason: You're out of shape, need more practice, or were just born that way.
Solution: Start calling this trick an "Easy Grind" instead of a feeble grind. You'll learn it almost instantly then.
